Deep Dish Hawaiian Pizza for #BreadBakers

BreadBakers
#BreadBakers is a group of bread loving bakers who get together once a month to bake bread with a common ingredient or theme. You can see all our lovely bread by following our Pinterest board right here. Links are also updated after each event on the #BreadBakers home page. We take turns hosting each month and choosing the theme/ingredient.

Karen from Karen's Kitchen Stories invited the group to "Bake your favorite pizza... pan pizza, grandma pizza, deep dish pizza, Chicago style pizza, flatbread pizza, Detroit Style Pizza, English muffin pizza, Neapolitan pizza, and/or grilled pizza (or any other type of pizza). In other words, share your favorite pizza recipe."

I love Hawaiian pizza! It's always my go to. I like adding other things to it - usually mushrooms and / or pepperoncini's as well as the traditional ham / pineapple combination. This is a VERY deep dish recipe; depending on what size pan you used. I use only an 8" cake pan and had a very thick, soft base. You can use a 9" cake pan, or perhaps a cast iron skillet instead if you'd like more surface area!

If you are in the mood for a hearty, soft, deep dish pizza, this one absolutely fits the bill! And if you might be in the mood for something else - look no further than our list below for tons of tasty pizzas.

Deep Dish Hawaiian Pizza

Ingredients
2 Tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup pizza sauce
2 cups mozzarella cheese
1 ounce thin sliced ham or Canadian bacon cut into wedges
2 ounces pineapple tidbits drained
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Pizza Dough Ingredients
2-2 1/3 cups bread flour divided
2 1/4 teaspoon (1 packet) instant yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/8-1/4 teaspoon garlic powder and/or dried basil leaves optional
2 Tablespoons olive oil + additional
3/4 cup warm water

Directions
  1. Prepare your pizza dough first by adding the warm water, sugar, and yeast to the bowl of a stand mixer and blending gently. Set aside for 8-10 minutes until frothy and the yeast is activated.
  2. Stir in the salt, garlic powder, 2 TBS olive oil, and 2 cups of bread flour. Fit the mixer with a dough hook and turn to medium speed until dough ball comes together and then allow to mix for about 3 minutes until dough is smooth and well combined. If the dough is a little too dry, add a very small amount of water to the mix until the dough comes together. If the dough is a little too wet and doesn't form a ball, add a little more flour until dough ball comes together.
  3. Remove dough from the bowl and add a little bit of olive oil and return dough ball, flipping so that both sides are coated.
  4. Cover with a tea towel and set aside to rise in a warm place, about 1 hour.
  5. When dough is risen, preheat oven to 425 degrees. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface and press into an 8 or 9" cake pan (or cast iron skillet if desired). Press dough up the sides.
  6. Spread the pizza sauce around the center of the pizza, and sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the top. Spread the diced Canadian bacon and pineapple pieces over the cheese. Sprinkle the grated parmesan cheese over everything.
  7. Bake 25-30 minutes in the preheated oven until golden brown and the dough is baked all the way through. (Bake time will depend on size of the pan / thickness of the dough).
  8. Cool in pan about 5-8 minutes before sliding out onto a cutting board. Cut and serve as desired!
